XSXL was founded in 2018 as a joint venture by Gerd Wetzel, Johannes Dotzauer, and Padoplan GmbH. We focus on conceptual and design activities to complement Padoplan’s many years of experience in the implementation of projects in all service phases, especially in the early project and concept phases.

Johannes Dotzauer, Founding Partner of Padoplan GmbH, has 30 years of management experience in projects of various sizes and service phases for clients such as Allianz, Pro7, Homanit, Vonovia or Wüstenrot.

Before starting his own business, Gerd Wetzel worked in internationally-renowned architectural offices such as OMA, Massimiliano Fuksas, Brisac Gonzales, MVRDV, Herzog & de Meuron on projects of various scales. He was an Assistant Professor at the Chair for Space and Design at the KIT Architecture Faculty.

Mission Statement

We are excited about challenges on every scale.

We believe in the combinatorial performance that architecture can achieve: the right mixture of location, program, organization, form and structure, tailored to the wishes of each client and the specific conditions of each project.

We develop projects for the particular task at hand, rather than following predetermined conventions or aesthetic strategies. By returning to the fundamentals of architecture and working on them with critical naivety, we sometimes discover new territory, revisit forgotten terrain, and reaffirm the tried and tested. With this approach, our architectural strategies and solutions exceed the original expectations.
